ARMI BioFabUSA: Manufacturing the Future of Biofabrication
The tissue engineered medical product (TEMP) industry has been held back historically by a lack of scalability, challenges with product consistency, and high final product costs. BioFabUSA is a program of the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute (ARMI), an industry-led, member-driven, non-profit organization whose mission is to make practical the scalable, consistent, cost-effective manufacturing of engineered tissues and tissue-related technologies, to benefit existing industries and grow new ones. ARMI leverages an $80MM investment by the Department of Defense and the expertise of its 150+ industry, academic and non-profit members to carry out this mission. The ARMI | BioFabUSA ecosystem comprises of technologies and trends that crosscut manufacturing areas in raw materials, automation, equipment, software, measurement tools, data management, preservation, processes, quality systems, and other pertinent elements of tissue engineered medical product manufacturing. With the combined effort of the ARMI membership, ARMI drives impactful advanced research and development activities that address TEMP manufacturing capability gaps identified by its ecosystem. The outcome of this cumulative effort is the development of a portfolio of technologies enable the development of a scalable, modular, automated and closed platform for the fabrication of TEMPs. This platform will help the ARMI membership and the TEMP ecosystem to focus on continuous manufacturing technology development and demonstration; compressing timelines for process design and development; and commercial, GMP-compliant manufacturing.
