Combining PV & OTFT for Battery-free, Self-powered ePaper Systems

In this work, we introduce the combination of a low power organic-TFT based ePaper screen, PV cells and a supercapacitor to one sustainable and fully self-powered system. Being energy-autarky, this device eliminates the need for replacing or recharging batteries. Both display and solar cells are glass-free and thus flexible, lightweight & robust, so they are ideally suited for wearables and other smart devices. Strategies are discussed to further enhance the existing low power characteristics of ePaper screens: A mixture of software and hardware measures can help reduce the energy budget down to around 25% compared to its initial power consumption. Furthermore, an efficient power management and energy harvesting approach will be discussed to collect, convert and store the energy with minimal losses. In combination with a low power wireless module (i.e. LoRa, BLE), the feasibility of a fully wireless connected & powered system is shown.
