Flexible eWriters – From Small to Large Format
Flexible, roll-to-roll manufactured liquid crystal films are used to create the Boogie Board ® eWriter devices. Creating and designing low cost flexible electronic components into mass-market devices requires innovation to stay ahead of the competition. Truly low-cost devices for flexible electronic components require a robust supply chain and a keen focus on component-level development. eWriters fulfill a unique handwriting market niche, which has only grown and become more desirable as keypad and touchpad devices fill the market more each day. The eWriter technology, based on ChLC, has inherent reflective color, bistability, and requires no power to maintain a static image. By applying localized pressure to the eWriter with either a stylus or fingertip, a bright line is written on the dark background of the display. The immediate writing response time, natural writing feel – similar to pen on paper, and smear-free palm rejection make this an excellent device for lists, drawings, and handwritten notes, among others. The unique single pixel device allows for high-resolution handwriting by utilizing the liquid crystal polymer dispersion and cholesteric liquid crystal domains. In addition, recent technological advancements will be presented, including the challenges of manufacturing a wide span of screen sizes, translucent films, and partial screen erase.
